First Circus College in USA to Take Shape in Philadelphia

If you are a circus performer living in the US, there are many circus schools to choose from.  However, none of them offer a state recognized diploma like those that exist abroad.  For those looking to get serious about elevating their craft, all of that is about to change.

In 2014, a board of directors was formed and a strategic plan was put into place to create a circus college in Philadelphia.  Its name is Circadium and its goal is to prepare students for successful performing careers.  The curriculum consists of vigorous physical training as well as entrepreneurial education. Their list of contributors includes experts from various disciplines. As a fellow juggler myself, I immediately recognized two big names from the juggling world: Greg Kennedy and Jay Gilligan!

On August 29th, a Circadium Kickstarter campaign was started with the goal of raising $50,000.  One month and four days later, and with the help of 308 backers, they reached their goal.  These funds will go towards launching the program, which includes renovating a historic church into the perfect training environment.

Circadium seems to be in the right place at the right time.  As awareness grows regarding the unsavory practices of traditional American circuses, people everywhere are ready for a change.  America is ready to join the modern circus revolution.  With a thriving arts and entertainment community, Philadelphia seems like a great place for this type of school to be launched.  It is being built upon the foundation of the highly successful Philadelphia School of Circus Arts.

The first day of classes will be September 5th, 2017.  On that day, a hand-picked group of students will begin their educational journey, and the rest of us will eagerly await the innovate circuses of tomorrow.
